Not the most exciting game I've ever attended, as the Pats lost 7-6. Here's what I saw from the team's second tune-up though.
OFFENSE:
-Tom Brady was 4-8 for 57 yards running with the first team. He had a couple of overthrows and was sacked once. This was a good forum for him to get ready for for the regular season, and he still has time to get back to '07 form.
-The first team ran a no huddle offense with mostly four wide receivers. Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Joey Galloway, and Greg Lewis spread the field with Fred Taylor next to Brady in the shot-gun.
-Kevin O'Connell was the second QB off the bench, but didn't really impress going 8-15 for 84 yards. Andrew Walter did not play, but it looks like the #2 QB job is up for grabs. Un-drafted rookie Brad Hoyer out of Michigan State was given a chance to show what he had and he went 11-19 for 112 yards. He showed a decent arm and some good athleticism, but will most likely be the odd man out.
-Fred Taylor rushed 7 times for 27 yards and caught a pass for 12 yards starting the game. Maroney, who started last week rushed 3 times for 6 yards adding a 14 yard reception. BenJarvis Green-Ellis ran hard for 44 yards on 10 carries while also hauling in 3 receptions. Sammy Morris did not dress.
DEFENSE:
-Wouldn't you know it, the Pats came out playing a 3-4 D again. The starting lineup read: Vince Wilfork, Richard Seymour, and Ty Warren on the d-line. Jerod Mayo, Gary Guyton, Adalius Thomas, and Pierre Woods were the 'backers. Leigh Bodden, Darius Butler, Brandon Merriweather, and James Sanders were in the secondary. Derrick Burgess, Tully Banta-Cain, Shawn Springs, and Jarvis Green (and sometimes rook Myron Pryor) were subbing in on third downs.
-Interesting that Springs was the nickle back, and that he was playing with the second string in the second quarter. It was thought that Springs would come in and be a starting corner; one that could match up against the like of TO and others. Rookie Darius Butler looks like he has jumped ahead of the vet. Jonathan Wilhite did not dress, but he could be battling Springs for nickle back duties. Terrence Wheatley is definitely last, as he was burnt on a few occasions.
-Tedy Bruschi ran with the second team at MLB and was playing on special teams. Not used to seeing him there. One has to wonder if he'd settle for a backup role, or retire.
SPECIAL TEAMS:
-Stephen Gostkowski is a stud kicker. The Pro-Bowler nailed kicks of 32 and 41 with ease.
-Nathan Hodel, the veteran of the two-person race for long-snapper, got the nod tonight after Jake Ingram got a look last week. Like I've said before, I am not expert at judging a long-snapper, so we will have to see who Belichick picks to keep.
-Julian Edelman was back deep to return punts. He made a poor choice on one play to let a ball go that was pinned within our 5-yard line.
-Maroney was back deep to return a kick in the second quarter. Matthew Slater was deep for the other kickoff.
That's what I could see from my seats, but I am sure I missed some from not watching it on TV. Thoughts anyone?
Great Stuff Carl!! Keep going I may actually be able to keep up witht he teams solely from your blog.
