While the Sox are the only team in Boston currently going through their season they have been providing enough news and entertainment for everybody. Getting swept by the Yankees is getting talked about like it’s the end of the world. The division is looking tough to take, but the wild card race will be ours to lose. Victor Martinez has been solid and new acquisition Casey Kotchman is finally getting some at bats and even hit one out to the porch in right at Yankee Stadium. Daniel Bard might be coming back to reality. While he is a rookie, who has great potential, he is still young and I am sure teams now have a legitimate scouting report on him.
On to tonight’s game and the series with Detroit. It was nice to see the Sox move on from getting swept and able to play a solid game. Brad Penny was his normal self-throwing 93 pitches over six innings giving up three earned. The bats came alive and Dustin Pedroia, Nick Green, and Jason Bay went yard. It was good to see Bay play well after sitting with a hamstring injury. Bay was batting 7th, which seemed interesting to me. It was Manny Delcarmen's turn to try to blow the game for the Sox tonight, but Jonathan Papelbon was able to come in and get an easy 9th inning save.
In other Sox news Tim Wakefield threw a 51-pitch bullpen session. His arm is fine and ready to go, but the problem is that he has a calf injury that is not going away. Look for Wake to return soon.
In other news the Celtics were able to sign Glen Davis to a two year 6.3 million dollar contract. Baby seemed to fall into our lap at that price and only having to give him two years. The big free agents all signed earlier and Baby was left with no choice, but to return to the Celts. Baby will add frontcourt depth and look for the Doc Rivers to use Rasheed Wallace at center now in order to get Baby more minutes.
Rookie Lester Hudson will be returning to action in about two weeks from a broken finger. The Celtics are deep and it will be interesting to see if he gets a contract. His agent did mention Europe as a possibility.
Marquis Daniels is still not a Celtic, but he has verbally committed. The Celtics want to do a sign and trade with the Pacers and shed Tony Allen, but the Pacers do not seem interested. The biannual exception seems more likely.
The Patriots hosted DE Vonnie Holliday today and it seems clear the Pats are trying to add depth to their D-line.
There is also Bruins news today. The Bruins first round pick Jordan Caron has fractured his Collarbone while trying out for the Team Canada World Junior Team. He will be out 4-6 weeks and will be ready to go right around the start of rookie camps.
