After dropping their season opener in a 4-1 loss to the Washington Capitals, the Boston Bruins walked into the Garden with a different game plan. The Canes' eliminated Boston in game seven of last years second round playoffs, and the B's were out for blood Saturday night.
Claude Julien's game plan was simple. More shots for more scoring opportunities and capitalize on the power play. As soon as the puck dropped you could see how much they wanted it. They started agressively, forechecking the Carolina defenders in the corner. The Bruins were flying on the ice peppering 21 shots on Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward. The first shot to drop would come from Marc Savard on the PP at the 4:06 mark. Derek Morris and Michael Ryder would get the assists after Morris took a slap shot that bounced to Ryder for another shot leading to a Savvy empty net special.
On the third man advantage in the 1st period, Morris sent a pass along the blue line to Zdeno Chara who would put a wrister on Ward that would find its way to a charging Michael Ryder for his second PP point. With the Garden was still rocking, 30 seconds later Milan Lucic would chip one out of the the Boston zone leading newcomer Steve Begin on a two-on-one with Blake Wheeler. Begin then sauced a pass that Wheeler would pick up and the B's would head into the locker room with an early 3-0 lead.
Boston came out with the same intensity in the second period and half way through Marco Sturm would pick up his first goal of the season right after killing a Wheeler penalty. Carolina head coach Paul Maurice would pull goalie Cam Ward replacing him with back up Michael Leighton. With the Carolina bench almost at break point, a minute later Dennis Wideman would blast a one-timer home from Reechi and Bergeron on another Bruins PP. Scott Walker would steal Thomas' shut out and put the Canes' on the board 5-1 at 15:21 in the second. Shortly after Scott Thornton would score for the Bruins making it a 6-1 game.
The second would end with blood on the ice after Lucic dropped the gloves for the first time this season with Carolina D Jay Harrison. The two squared up after what felt like deja vu of the Bruins brawl with the Dallas Stars last season. To make things clear, former Bruin D Andrew Alberts put what looked like a hit from behind on RW Marco Sturm that resulted a full out brawl.
Looch pummeled Harrison with a bunch of hay-makers; the last one leaving its mark splitting Harrison's fore head open.
The third was left for the B's to beat Carolina down physically and that's what they did. Eric Staal would return after being hit in the ear by a shot. Staal netted the second goal for his team on the early third period man-up. Minutes later Matt Hunwick would score the last Boston goal on another Bruins power play. Scott Thornton would throw down with Alberts before the final buzzer leaving him with more than he could handle.
Notes:
-Power Play: Boston was 4/8 vs. CAR which made up for their 0/5 debut vs. WAS.
- Savard (1G, 2A) had a three point night, a frequent performance for him.
-Ryder & Morris - combined for four man-advantage points.
-Tim Thomas had 25 saves.
