Wakefield Resigns and More - UPDATED

The Red Sox signed Tim Wakefield to a two year contract today that will keep the 43-year old in town for two more years. Coming off back surgery, the Red Sox wanted to restructure the knuckle-baller's contract which was guaranteed. Instead of the $4 million recurring option they had in place, the two sides scrapped it and agreed to a deal that will give him $3.5 million this year and $1.5 million in 2011.

In other news the Red Sox picked up Victor Martinez's $7.1 million option. V-Mart hit .336 with a .912 OPS in 56 games with the Sox and will be the starting catcher next year.

The Red Sox continued their busy day by declining their portion of Jason Varitek's option. The team elected to not pick up the $5 million option they owed Tek reported will pick up his $3 million option and will be back as the backup catcher; he hit a measly .157 after the break, but his value behind the plate is invaluable.

The Sox didn't pick up Alex Gonzalez's $6 million option. The defensive wiz could likely be brought back at a lesser price.

Trade options for the Red Sox, RHP Roy Halladay and 1B Adrian Gonzalez. Halladay has a full no-trade clause, but the Sox are reportedly one of the teams he would accept a trade to. The new GM's of the Blue Jays and Padres each made statements in the past week suggesting that those players could be moved at the right price. If the Sox could land either of these studs it could make for a monster offseason.
