19-year old Sox outfield prospect Ryan Westmoreland will undergo brain surgery on Tuesday to attempt to fix a cavernous malformation that has developed in his brain, team officials released early this week. Westmoreland, who played his high school ball in Portsmouth, Rhode Island and is widely considered the top position prospect in the organization, complained of headaches beginning two weeks ago.
After a battery of tests were conducted, he received diagnosis which was re-affirmed by several doctors. This is devastating news for the youngster as the condition could be life-threatening. It was announced yesterday that he will undergo surgery in Tuscon, Arizona to attempt to remove the malformation.
The kid can't catch a break. After breaking onto the scene as a 5th round draft pick in 2008, he spent all of 2009 recovering from a broken clavical bone. Before the injury he was tearing it up at Single-A Lowell with a .296 average, .401 OBP, 7 HRs, 35 RBIs, and 19 SBs in just 223 ABs. When team's came calling at the trade deadline, Theo Epstein made it clear that the Sox have no interest in moving the young talent.
