This is the Clay Buchholz we have been waiting for. Clay pitched 8 1/3 innings of one-run ball striking out nine batters, while scattering three hits and two walks. He saw his ERA dip from 5.08 to 4.38 on the evening and evened his record at 3-3. However, Tito sent him out there for the 9th with 99 pitches and after he got the first out he gave up single. Okajima then gave up two hits without recording an out and all of a sudden it was a one-run game. Papelbon then came in and got the last two outs on five pitches for his 32nd save.
Pedroia singled in Jacoby in the first to get the game started quickly. Two more runs were scored in the sixth on an Alex Gonzalez RBI single and a V-Mart walk with the bases loaded. Jacoby tripled and doubled in the game, and has his average up to .301. For a while no one on the Sox was near .300 but now including Jacoby, Pedroia is at .302, Youk at .306, Lowell at .299, and even V-Mart at .289. So good to see this offense clicking.
MORE:
-Look for Paul Byrd to make the start tomorrow afternoon. Wake to the DL? McBeth sent back down? We'll see.
-Perhaps V-Mart will continue to catch Clay.
-Ryan Westmoreland, our fourth ranked prospect on soxprospects.com, broke his collarbone last night running into a wall. The 19-year old 2008 5th round pick was hitting .296 with 7 HRs and 19 steals for the Lowell Spinners. He is out for the year, but look out for this OF in the future.
