Brad Penny will be moving to the bullpen with Wakefield set to return and pitch Wednesday. Tazawa's performance against the Yankees obvious out shined that of Penny's which made this decision easier. Victor Martinez will apparently catch Wake, with Tek sticking to Beckett and Lester. Varitek has never taken over to catch Wake on a consistent in their entire tenures here, so this is no surprise.
A slimmed down and stronger Dice-K will try and throw three innings for the rookie ball Gulf Coast League Red Sox affiliate. If all goes well I think Dice-K can make it up here in September, and could take a few turns around in the rotation. Jed Lowrie will begin a rehab assignment tomorrow for the PawSox, as his balky wrist appears to be OK. These chronic problems with his wrist are really de-railing his development, and I really hope he can stay healthy and get back on track. Best case scenario this season: he comes back and takes over Nick Green's backup infielder role.
The Sox have eight righties in the lineup tonight with Ortiz and Drew headed to the bench. Ortiz has been HOT lately, but it is the right move for the Sox to go right-handed heavy against thick CC. Lowell will DH and Rocco Baldelli will play right.
John Smoltz went five innings of shut-out ball while striking out nine against the Padres today.
