What a way to kick-off the season last night. There's no need for me to recap really; if you're reading the blog, you watched the game. I'll post now about the what I observed on the offensive side. Expect to see defense in special teams in the coming posts.
OFFENSE:
-Brady finished very strong, stepping up in the pocket and looking very poised. The pocket presence and poise was absent in the first half for the most part, but he got better as the game went on. His 39/53 line was superb.
-The RB position is confusing. Coming out in conventional, under-center sets in the first half, the Pats handed the ball off to Maroney (10 carries 32 yards) and Taylor (9 carries, 25 yards, TD) quite a bit. However, when it came to catch-up mode in the second half, Faulk (6 receptions, 51 yards) dominated the snaps. All in all, Faulk played 42 snaps, Maroney 23, Taylor 16, and Sammy Morris 7 (some at fullback).
-Moss and Welker, each with 12 receptions, have such superb chemistry with Brady. Hopefully Joey Galloway, 0 catches, can begin to develop in the offense as we move forward.
-How about Ben Watson. He missed nearly all of camp, played with all the scrubs in the final preseason game in the second half, and his roster spot was up in the air. Then he runs two identical routes on back-to-back TD catching drives and finishes with six catches, 77 yards, and those two CLUTCH TDs. Gotta love his resilience and work ethic to get to that point.
-The weakest point on the offense last night was the O-line. In particular Aaron Schobel dominated Matt 'Todd' Light all night long, and Brady was his back more often than we'd like to see. On a number of occasions the team would bring in rookie Sebastian Vollmer in at LT and move Light to the right side as a sixth offensive lineman next to Kazcur. This is an obvious run set, but the team did utilize play action on atleast one of the sets on a 15-yard strike to Moss. Very interesting to see if we see more six-offensive lineman packages going forward.
-Speaking of going forward, the team needs to work on pass protection because it doesn't get easier next week against the Jets.
A recap of the Patriots D is to come. Cross your fingers about Mayo.
