Ray Allen, entering the final year of a 5 year $85 million, expressed interest to the Boston Globe about an extension. The recently turned 34 year-old will be making $19.7 million this season, and expressed an interest to stay with this veteran group and get back to the championship 2008 form.
Next year's free agent class is going to be stacked with the likes of Lebron, Wade, Bosh, Amare and more, so how can the team gage what Ray Ray's value will be on the open mark? They probably can't. The team will be getting some financial flexibility with Scal, Tony Allen, Eddie House, Marquis Daniels, and Sheldon Williams.
Rajon Rondo will require a large contract after next season too, so it may come down to the team having to decide between Ray and Rajon. With huge contracts dished out to KG and Pierce (who will be eligible for free agency after 2011), the team cannot afford to give $15+ million to each player.
Unless he decides to take a discount to stay, it appears as if Ray Allen will have to wait for an extension right now. Firstly, the team will need to focus on next season and our march toward another championship. After that the team must resign Rondo, and decide if they can bring Ray back too. There is so much turnover in the NBA, and the Celtics must decide how much money a 35 year old Ray Allen deserves over the lifetime of an extension.
