WR Joey Galloway was released this morning after being a healthy scratch for the last few weeks. It was widely believed when the Patriots signed the 37-year old speedster that he would be able to stretch defenses vertically with teams doubling Randy Moss. We never saw that explosion from Galloway and he was promptly shown the door.
The team also cut TE Michael Matthews who was traded for an undisclosed draft pick from the Giants at the end of training camp. Matthews hardly saw the field behind Watson and Baker.
Specials teamer and MLB Eric Alexander was released today as well. Alexander has been with the team since 2004, but was the fourth player cut in the past two days.
The Patriots continued their trend of dumping off-season acquisitions. Earlier this year the Patriots traded for WR Greg Lewis and TE Alex Smith, each have been cut.
Patriots rookie 3rd round pick WR/KR Brandon Tate is eligible to be activated from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Tate was an explosive kick returner at the University of North Carolina, but is coming off knee surgery. Tate could be added to the mix at WR behind Moss, Welker, Edelman, and Aiken.
Offensive tackle Mark LeVoir is also eligable to be taken off of the PUP. LeVoir signed an extenion in training camp through 2011, and could add depth with Matt Light out.
It was speculated last night the team could bring back Banta-Cain after being released yesterday.
Bill Belichick predictably had no update on Sammy Morris' knee. Morris was helped off the field after buckling his knee in the first quarter.
The team now has some open roster spots after this recent flurry of moves.
joey gone is a good thing. The salary cap hit is manageable, and with the headache of trying to decide what to do with him gone, I think the reciever core is pretty much set. Look for Julian Edelman to make a surge to become third or fourth reciever. Reminds me a lot of Wes Welker.
