Patriots Rout Titans

The Patriots are 11-0 all-time in snow games at Foxborough.

Some people say the NFL is the greatest sport in existence because its infrastructure of free agency, drafting, and waiver claims creates an atmosphere where NFL teams can regularly emerge and diminish in one year.

Look no further to prove this point than the Patriots (4-2) routing of the now (0-6) Titans.

Just one year ago the Titans were the class of the NFL finishing with a 13-3 record in the regular season. Although the Pats finished 11-5 they missed the playoffs and were forced to adapt to life without Tom Brady.

Flash forward to week 6 of the 2009 season and boy have things changed.

It was clear all week what the Patriots wanted to do. There had been discussion all last week about the Patriots inability to hit the big play. With a ravaged Titans secondary the big play was a point of emphasis in practice and clearly practice makes perfect.

The Patriots were up 45-0 at the half (an NFL record for point differential at the half), and won the game 59-0 (tied for the biggest point differential in a game since 1950). Everything came way too easy for the Pats.

Let's check out our preview for the game and see how the Pats dominated.

Treat the Titans like they are 5-0, not 0-5. Any doubt about this one?

Contain Chris Johnson.
While they held CJ to just 60 total yards in the first half, the game was clearly over at halftime with the Titans trailing 45-0. Nonetheless the Pats gave up 193 rushing yards, something I'm sure Coach Belichick will touch on this week.

Exploit the Titans' secondary weakness'.
Tom Brady torched the Titans secondary for perhaps one of the best games of his career. Tom terrific was 29/34 for 380 yards and a whopping 6 TD's. Randy Moss (8-129-3) and Wes Welker (10-150-2) both enjoyed superb days connecting on 40 yard and 48 yard TD catches respectively. Kevin Faulk also added a 38 yard scamper from Brady. In total the Patriots had 4 plays of 38 yards or more.

Keep Tom Brady up-right.
The O-line played another great game Sunday. They gave up two sacks, but Brady had time to throw all day. The run blocking was top notch as well, as the Pats ran for 193 yards with Maroney leading the rushing attack. It has been a while since we've seen Maroney running this hard while showing explosive speed. He cracked a 45 yarder off a key block by Sebastian Vollmer that really opened some eyes.

The Patriots head across the globe to Wembley Stadium in London, England for a "showdown" (or lack there of) vs. the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Lets get through the Bucs game with the win and healthy before the week 8 bye.

EXTRAS:

-The Patriots moved into sole possession of first place of the AFC East with Sunday's win.

-Wilhite and Butler started in place of Springs and Bodden. Rookies Butler and Patrick Chung each had interceptions in the most extensive action of their young careers.

-
Derrick Burgess played the majority of the snaps for OLB Adalius Thomas who was a healthy scratch for his "performance." Interestingly, he only played 50% of the defensive snaps last week in Denver.

-The Patriots played almost exclusively in a 3-4 set on D.

-
Junior Seau got some snaps in garbage time. It was a good opportunity for him to get re-acclimated to the NFL.

- Sammy Morris injured his knee in the first quarter. We'll know more when the injury report comes out.

-Moss had two TD catches in 57 seconds of 40 and 28 yards.

-5 TD's for Brady in the 2nd quarter tied an NFL record.

-Rookie QB
Brian Hoyer made his NFL debut after Brady was lifted early in the third quarter. The un-drafted rookie out of Michigan State showed good command of the offense leading them on a 61 yard TD drive.
