Bruins Down the Penguins

Daniel Paille (right) celebrates his first
goal of the season with Marc Recchi.

The Bruins came out tonight and took out the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins with force. The Penguins were without top players Evgeni Malkin and Sergei Gonchar and the Bruins capitalized and came away with the win. The game was tied 0-0 in the second period when Matt Hunwick scored his fourth goal of the season on a back-hander that went top shelf after he circled the net. Initially, the goal was waved off but upon review it was determined that the goal was good and the score stood 1-0. At the beginning of the third period Daniel Paille got in behind two Pittsburgh defenders and received a beautiful pass from Marc Recchi that set up a break-away goal. Patrice Bergeron capped off the game by adding an empty-netter with three seconds remaining in regulation resulting in a 3-0 final.
  • Tim Thomas played extremely well tonight, turning away all 27 shots sent his way.
  • The PK unit continues to play well, successfully killing off two penalties tonight.
  • Penguins star captain Sidney Crosby was kept quiet by the Bruins defenders tonight which greatly attributed to the team's success.
  • Even with the solid win this evening, there is still plenty of room for improvement across the top line.
  • David Krejci returned from the swine flu and almost scored, but was robbed by Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.
  • Bruins legend Ray Bourque watched as his son Chris made his first appearance in the Garden in his third NHL season. Chris Bourque played a year of collegiate hockey at Boston University.
  • The Three Stars of the Game: 1) Tim Thomas 2) Zdeno Chara 3) Matt Hunwick
The B's play next Thursday versus the Florida Panthers.
