Next Stop: Canton

#55 Always Jacked Up

Today Patriots linebacker Junior Seau announced his retirement once again from the NFL, and this time he is hanging it up for good. The 12-time pro bowler built his career as a San Diego Charger and then became a leader on and off the field for the Pats with a brief pit stop in Miami. After seeing a slew of leaders depart this past season including Bruschi, Vrable, Harrison, and Seymour, the Patriots were looking for a veteran presence and that is why the team decided to convince Seau to come back one last time. While he did get some snaps, his main role was pre and post game speeches. He will be eligible for the HOF in 2014.

What does this mean for the hometown team moving forward? The Pats are thin at linebacker with Jerod Mayo being the only solid option. Adalius Thomas has been a bust and might see his pink slip this off-season. Tully Banta-Cain is coming off a career season, but he cannot be the best pass rusher on this defense. Newcomer Derrick Burgess was not impresive at all and Gary Guyton looks nothing more than a solid backup. Belichick likes going defense in the draft so it wouldn't be surprising to see the Pats grab a LB early on, but then again the Patriots never seem to do the expected. After another disappointing season is the motto still "In Belichick we trust?" Share your thoughts in the comment section.
