Player Previews: Marco Scutaro

Today we will look at recently signed Marco Scutaro who will try and solve the club's revolving door that the shortstop position has become. Well will focus on his 2009 statistics, his career highs in parentheses, and a 2010 outlook.

Games:
144 (145, 2008)
Average: .282 (new career high, career average of .265)
On-Base Percentage: .379 (.new career high, career average of .337)
Slugging Percentage: .409 (new career high, career average of .384)
On Base plus Slugging: .789 (new career high, career average of .721)
Home runs: 12 (new career high)
Runs Batted In: 60 (tied career high, 2008)
Runs: 100 (new career high)
Doubles: 35 (new career high)
Walks: 90 (new career high)
Stolen Bases: 14 (new career high), 5 CS
UZR/150* at SS: +1 (career high +20.1 (56 games) in 2008)

*UZR/150 is a sabermetric number of runs above or below average a fielder is, per 150 defensive games. Zero is an average fielder.

2010 Outlook: The numbers tell a story. Most of the statistics for Scutaro last season were career highs. The 34-year old broke out and found a set position last season after a career as a utility man at the perfect time and cashed in on a two-year $12.5 million deal with an option for a third year.

It may be a stretch to think that Marco will put up the same numbers again, but batting ninth in this line-up, it's not a requirement that he does. Scutaro grinds out at bats, as he led all shortstops in pitches per at bat, and will help extend the lineup. He will be a solid force patrolling the middle of the infield and the team hopes that Scutaro can translate the success he found in Toronto to Fenway Park.
