RED SOX- Jeremy Hermida and the Red Sox avoided arbitration yesterday by agreeing to a 1-year $3,345,000 contract. That number is just about in between the $3.85 million he was looking for and the $2.95 million the Sox were offering. Hermida is 25 years old and will provide a left-handed bat off the bench while backing up the corner outfield spots.
- Tim Wakefield proclaimed yesterday that he plans on being a starter this season despite the team's excellent depth. The Sox are in a bit of a predicament with six legitimate starters penciled in to the 25-man roster: Beckett, Lester, Lackey, Matsuzaka, Buchholz, and Wake. Typically these situations tend to work themselves out, so we'll have to see how it shakes out for the Sox. However, who is the odd man out if the Sox enter the season with these six guys healthy?
PATRIOTS- Wes Welker's surgery for his torn ACL is set for Tuesday, February 2nd. Why the delay? Welker had to wait for the swelling to go down from his torn MCL before he could have the torn ligament in his left knee repaired. He could miss anywhere from 6-12 months depending on what the doctors discover during the operation. Cross your fingers on Tuesday for a good, clean surgery that will keep Welker out only six months.
- Vince Wilfork lashed out today about the possibility of the Patriots securing his rights with the one-year franchise tag. Big Vince called the tag a "slap" in the face, and that he would not be happy if the Patriots decide to go that route. In fact, he said he'd rather be locked up long-term or be free to sign anywhere. The 28-year old Wilfork is seeking a long-term pact with a substantial amount of guaranteed money, and it will be interesting to see how the Patriots approach the situation. One interesting thing to keep an eye on is the Miami Dolphins' desire for a nose tackle, and the fact that Wilfork is a former Miami Hurricane could be enough to lure the big man down south to the warm weather.
