The Mike Lowell Situation

Lowell was the 2007 World Series MVP

On December 10th, we reported that it looked like Mike Lowell would be packing his bags and heading to Texas. Lowell went on to fail his physical due to a 95% tear in the radial collateral ligament in his thumb. After all was said and done, Lowell remained with the Sox.

Finally recovered from his December 30th surgery, Lowell has appeared in two games thus far and is 1-4 at the plate. Lowell has been spending time at 1B for the Sox, a position he hasn't played since he was a Yankee farmhand in the minor leagues. The Sox hope that the position versatility will increase his trade value.

If the Sox decide to keep the veteran, his new position may be to add value to the team. His -14.6 UZR/150 last season showed his significant decline defensively at the hot corner coming off of hip surgery. If Lowell takes well to first base, the team can slide Youkilis to third on days they're looking to get him into the line-up. There is also a ripple effect if Lowell begins the year with the Sox, as it will directly affect their four man bench. With Jason Varitek and Jeremy Hermida, newly acquired Bill Hall will fill the role of utility infielder. Lowell would also provide good insurance to David Ortiz if he begins the year in a funk again.

Mike Lowell carries a $12 million salary in the final year of his pact, and the Sox were willing to eat as much as $9 million of that during the winter in trade talks. It appears more than likely that Lowell will be moved at some point in the near future, even if he begins the year on the active roster.
