Jason Varitek doubled in the seventh and Nick Green ran for him. Terry Francona proceeded to pinch-hit Victor Martinez for Alex Gonzalez and V-Mart doubled him home to tie the game. Jason Bay hit the go-ahead HR in the eighth inning and the Red Sox didn't look back. On a night where Victor did not start, he lit a fire under the Red Sox offense that powered the team to a victory. This odd-man out on most nights scenario will allow the Sox to pinch hit for Gonzalez and Varitek at the bottom of the order at the end of games. Not to be lost in all of this was Jacoby Ellsbury setting the club record for steals in a season with 55; what a dimension he adds to the lineup.
Jon Lester didn't have his 'A' stuff tonight, but he spun together a quality start (his 11th in his last 12 starts) to keep the team in the game. Lester gave up three earned runs while allowing four hits, two walks, and striking out six over 6 2/3 IP. Oki, Delcarmen, and Paps finished off the game shutting the ChiSox down. Papelbon has pitched consecutive games, so don't expect to see him tomorrow. Oki has too, but the Sox may still use him. Sox look to take a third straight game tomorrow night as Wakefield returns to the mound.
