The Sox edged this one out 10-9. Here's how it went down.
We got the W with Josh Beckett on the mound, but it wasn't as smooth as it was supposed to be. Beckett was not on tonight giving up seven earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. He just couldn't get it together, even when Tito tried to send him out there in the 5th to try and get one more inning out of him before Delcarmen relieved him. Oki pitched a usual solid inning in the 7th, but Bard continued his skid giving up two runs before Papelbon was forced into a four out save.
On the offensive front, every batter collected a hit. Ortiz continued his hot stretch, as he homered, doubled, and walked twice even though he was not in the original line-up (Varitek was scratched due to neck soreness). Bay added a HR and two walks and appears to be coming out of his slump as well. Jacoby was 3-3 setting the tone and his average is up to .300. V-Mart had another big hit in the eighth inning when he doubled home Alex Gonzalez; Victor has been getting some big hits in big situations.
Beckett will take on the Yanks later this week and will look to rebound. In case you were wondering, this was V-Mart's first time catching Beckett, so look for Tek to be behind the plate in the near future when Beckett toes the rubber.
More:
-Dustin Pedroia left the team for the birth of his family's first child. Nick Green played second base.
-The bullpen coach Gary Tuck took over John Farrell's regular duties as pitching coach, as Farrell missed the game.
-Martinez caught Wakefield's side-session before the game in preparation of his return off of the DL.
-Rocco Baldelli went 0-3 in a rehab start for the PawSox. Good to see Rocco back and swinging; it is important that he is up here and light-hitting Brian Anderson is not.
-Youkilis was 1-4 with a walk in his return to the line-up. The Sox missed his bat in Texas, so hopefully his hiatus will help him down the stretch run.
-The Rangers lost, so we're tied in the Wild Card. The Yankees one; again.
