Pitching Previews: Jon Lester
We will continue to look at Red Sox pitchers today with Jon Lester. Lester progressed beautifully last year in his battle back from non-hodgkin's lymphoma and appears to be on his way to serve as the club's ace. We will focus on his 2009 statistics, his career highs in parentheses, and a 2010 outlook.
Games Started: 32 (33 - 2008)
ERA: 3.41 (3.21 - 2008)
WHIP: 1.23 (new career high)
Wins: 15 (16 - 2008)
Strike Outs: 225 (new career high)
Innings Pitched: 203.1 (210.1 - 2008)
Batting Average Against: .242 (new career low)
Pitches/Game Started: 106.3 (new career high)
2010 Outlook: Jon Lester is entering his third straight year as a starter for the team. He saw his strikeout number increase significantly, punching out over one opponent per inning. His ERA did rise a tad last year, but with the improved defense behind him, he should see that dip closer to three. The 26-year old fireballer is coming into his own and should be as reliable as they come every fifth day.
