Pitching Previews: Josh Beckett

We will begin looking at the Red Sox pitchers today beginning with Josh Beckett. Entering a contract year, the Sox hope Beckett comes out firing better than ever. We will focus on his 2009 statistics, his career highs in parentheses, and a 2010 outlook.

Games Started: 32 (33 - 2006)
ERA: 3.86 (3.04 - 2003)
WHIP: 1.19 (1.14 - 2007)
Wins: 17 (20 - 2007)
Strike Outs: 199 (new career high)
Walks: 55 (career low - 34 - 2008)
Innings Pitched: 212 (new career high)
Batting Average Against: .244 (.234 - 2005)
Pitches/Game Started: 105.2 (new career high)

2010 Outlook: Entering the final year of his deal, Josh Beckett maybe pitching for his last big contract as he turns 30 in May. The improved defense lining up behind the team's ace will certainly help, and hopefully he can get that 3.86 ERA even lower. Beckett should come out firing right out of the gate this season and may even find himself in the Cy Young discussion once again.

  2. traditionally, Beckett performs best in odd number years (03, 05, 07, 09) cause he's got a longer offseason to strengthen the shoulder, but this offseason was pretty long also so we'll see if past habits continue

  3. Interesting observation Joe. The extra time should do him well.
