Cristian Guzman to the Sox?

The Red Sox have claimed Cristian Guzman off of waivers from the Washington Nationals according to the Boston Globe. What this really means is a few things:

1) The Nationals can pull him off of waivers and keep him
2) They can pull him off of waivers and trade him to the Red Sox only
3) They can let the Red Sox take him and his entire salary (~$2.5 million this year and $8 million next)

Guzman would be a good fit on the Sox. This 31 year old switch-hitting shortstop is batting .314 this year in 379 ABs. While he doesn't walk much (his OBP is only .332), he is still a good at bat and would fit beautifully at the bottom of the order. He would also by default be the starting shortstop next year too (with the Sox paying a total of $17 million to shortstops including Julio Lugo).

Nick Green's batting average is down to .236 with a .304 OBP and Lowrie is on the DL again with a bum wrist. Improvement? Yes. Hopefully the lowly Nats are willing to cut ties with their shortstop.

  1. Cafardo's report was wrong. Guzman cleared waivers and the Nats don't want to trade him.
