The offense wasn't there tonight. Except for two solo home-runs by V-Mart and J-Bay, the Sox couldn't touch the rookie 23-year old Derek Holland. For some reason the Sox have not hit young pitchers well this season. Brad Penny was his usual unexciting and unspectacular self giving up four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings.
Other Notes:
-Brian Anderson, the 28-year old outfielder acquired from the White Sox for Mark Kotsay, was recalled while Josh Reddick was sent to triple-A Pawtucket. The right-handed batting Anderson gives the Sox a bit more off the bench in terms of defense and a right-handed bat to compliment the lefties (Drew and Jacoby). In fact, Drew is out until Tuesday or even Wednesday with a soar groin. Anderson won't offer much at the plate at all which really hurts the bottom of the line-up that tonight read Varitek, Anderson, and new/old SS Alex Gonzalez. It was obvious after the past two games that Reddick was starting to look over-matched in the batter's box and even in the field. The kid never played above AA, so this will give him a time to get some seasoning in Pawtucket until rosters expand in two weeks.
-Tim Wakefield allowed two runs over 3 2/3 IP in a rehab start tonight for Pawtucket while throwing 63 pitches. He struck out three, walked one, and gave up three hits. Knuckle ball catcher George Kottaras was also rehabbing and caught for Wake. I expect one more start in the farm for Wakefield. With the way the roster is constituted right now, it would be tough for the Sox to carry three catchers until rosters expand; meaning Wake could be up with the club for one or two starts without Kottaras.
-Expect Smoltz to be traded or released, as today is the deadline. Hopefully they can find some team to pick up the remainder of his waist of a contract ($5.5 million).
-Ian Kinsler was beamed in the head at the end of the game. Watch out for any retaliation today at 2 o'clock on TBS.
