Pitching Previews: John Lackey
We will continue to profile the Red Sox starters. Today's profile: John Lackey. Lackey will enter his first year in Boston, and is the team's prized off-season acquisition. We will focus on his 2009 statistics, his career highs in parentheses, and a 2010 outlook.
Games Started: 27 (33 - 2003-07)
ERA: 3.83 (3.01 - 2007)
WHIP: 1.27 (1.21 - 2007)
Wins: 11 (19 - 2007)
Strike Outs: 139 (199 - 2005)
Innings Pitched: 176.1 (224 - 2007)
Batting Average Against: .263 (.246 - 2006)
Pitches/Game Started: 101.9 (106.4 - 2006)
2010 Outlook: John Lackey is coming off of two fairly down years due to injury. Having missed a total of 15 starts over the last couple years, Lackey will look to rebound with the Red Sox. Taking part in their renowned offseason throwing program, the 31-year old 6'6" 245 lb Lackey will look to get back to his 2007 form. In the first year of a 5-year pact, Lackey will face less pressure than most big name free agents because he gets to pitch behind the likes of Beckett and Lester. The Sox are hoping to have a consistent 30+ starts out of the former World Series hero after having paid him the big bucks. In addition, the Sox also hope that the addition of the big Texan will take added pressure off of fellow rotation mate Daisuke Matsuzaka.
