Pitching Previews: Jonathan Papelbon

It's been a long offseason for Jonathan Papelbon. After ending the season with a blown save, the dominant closer will look to put it all together for another unbelievable regular season in 2010. Today, we will focus on his 2009 statistics, his career highs in parentheses, and a 2010 outlook.

ERA: 1.85 (0.92-2006)
WHIP: 1.15 (0.77-2007)
Saves: 38 (41-2008)
Wins: 1 (5-2008)
K's: 76 (84-2007)
Innings Pitched: 68.0 (69.1-2008)
Batting Average Against: .213 (.146-2007)

2010 Outlook: #58 is entering his sixth season with the big league club. While the Red Sox have signed much of their home-grown talent to long-term deals early in their careers, Papelbon continues to prefer to go year-by-year with the Sox through the arbitration process. The big Southern boy has gone on record saying that he could never pitch again and live comfortably for the rest of his life, so his preference to go yearly with the potential to make more money should come as no surprise for Red Sox fans.

After ending the season with a blown save against the Angels in the playoffs, Papelbon will look to right the ship and re-establish himself as the (one of) the most dominant closers in the league. In 2007, Paps had arguably his best year with 37 saves, a 1.85 ERA, and a 0.77 WHIP. Not so coincidentally, the Red Sox went on to win the World Series that year.

Remember who got the last out for the Sox in that marvelous '07 campaign? That's right.
